As the rising popularity of Cubano sandwiches, sopaipillas and tostones shows, Latin American cuisines beyond those from Mexico are gaining traction in the United States.

Which Latin American country is most likely to provide the next crossover hit? Chefs participating in The Culinary Institute of America’s Latin Flavors, American Kitchens conference in San Antonio in October discussed their bets.

Brazil and Argentina, given their affinity for fritters, empanadas and anything with coconut milk, are strong contenders, said Norman Van Aken, chef-owner of Norman’s in Orlando. “[Those foods] somehow strike to mobility vehicles the very notion of where the flavor gods live,” he said

They Vant To Suck Your Electricity: PECO Reminds Customers to Save Money by Stopping Vampire Energy Use in Their Homes

Business Wire, Oct 30, carpet shampooer 2009

PHILADELPHIA — Vampires . . .and ghosts and goblins too . . .may be cute when they are
trick or treating at your door, but they are not when they are wasting
energy and costing you money. PECO encourages customers to save energy
and money by preventing unnecessary, vampire, energy use in their
homes.

Many of the most common home electronics like computers, televisions,
stereos and smaller kitchen appliances can also be the biggest energy
users. Most often left plugged in, these electronics continue to use
power even when they are not in use. According to the U.S. Department of
Energy, 75 percent of the electricity used to power home electronics is
consumed when they are turned off, adding up to 10 percent to customers
monthly electric bills.

One of the easiest ways customers can save energy, and money, is by
reducing unneeded energy use in their homes. Customers can follow these
easy PECO tips to stop vampire energy use at Halloween and all
throughout the year:

  • Use a power strip with an on/off switch to fully power down home
    electronics while in standby mode.
  • Use a power strip for multiple battery chargers so it can be easily
switched off when not actively charging.
  • Unplug your charger for your cordless phone, portable music player or
other portable device after its recharged.
  • Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use

On World Psoriasis Day the International Psoriasis Council Hosts Latin American Dermatologists for Educational Symposium to Elevate Global Knowledge of Psoriasis

Business Wire, Oct 29, 2009

DALLAS — A first-of-its-kind symposium has convened today that brings together
U.S. and Latin American dermatologists in an effort to elevate the
global understanding of psoriasis and its treatment. Presented by the
International Psoriasis Council (IPC), the symposium will be held at the
Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas this week and will include
sessions led by leading dermatologists and nurses involved in psoriasis
management and research.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated disease that affects more than
125 million people worldwide, including nearly 7.5 million Americans and
over 8.5 million people in South America and Mexico. The
condition results from inflammation in the skin and overproduction of
skin cells that accumulate on the surface causing red, scaly plaques
that may itch and bleed. In addition to being a painful and potentially
debilitating condition, psoriasis often affects patients everyday work
and social life, as a result of the extreme discomfort and embarrassment
associated with the skin plaques.

Psoriasis can severely impact people lotion psoriasis both physically and emotionally,
says Alan Menter, M.D., president of IPC and chief of dermatology at
Baylor. Members of IPC are very active in psoriasis research, which has
significantly advanced the care of patients with psoriasis and psoriatic
arthritis in the U.S. and in many parts of the world. We want to share
our understanding and experiences with our Latin American colleagues so
that they too can apply these learnings in their own clinical practices.

The visiting dermatologists will meet with the IPC faculty of experts to
discuss a variety of topics including diagnosis and treatment, and
comorbidities associated with the condition, which can include obesity,
cardiovascular disease, lymphoma and depression

Warning after theft; Take care when withdrawing money from cash machines

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), Oct 28, 2009

WE’RE reminding people to take extra care when using cash machines.

It comes after another person was targeted when withdrawing cash.

We now need your help in tracing two people in connection with the ATM job at Lloyds TSB bank on Cloth Hall Street, in Huddersfield town centre, between 1.20pm and 1.30pm on Tuesday, September 29.

The bank was busy when a pensioner waited in a queue at f80 treadmill a cash machine inside the bank.

The 66-year-old woman was approached by two suspects who distracted her, removed her card from the machine then ran away.

The card was later used in Argos on Victoria Lane and at other cash machines.

We are looking for the two people pictured – a man of African Caribbean background, of stocky build, around 5ft 9ins tall with a round, stern looking face, a black wispy beard and wearing a blue and white anorak-style coat at the times.

And an Asian woman, around 5ft 2ins tall, slim build with long dark hair, distinctive black eye make up, dark painted nails and wearing all black and long black high heeled boots.

Anyone with information about the two people is asked to contact PC Anne Gilliver 0845 6060606 and or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

As usual, we would remind people to make sure they maintain their privacy when using cash machines and make sure people cannot see you enter your PIN.

. Meanwhile the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be at Honley Library on November 2 between 6pm and 7pm where they will be meeting residents.

Officers will be giving out free energy saving light bulbs as well as giving out crime prevention advice as it gets darker earlier.

And in an effort to reduce anti-social behaviour, the NPT has increased patrols in and around the Honley area with good results already.

This will continue especially as the festive season is fast approaching.

Re-think school plans; Mailbag

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), Oct 28, 2009

IN this age of economic austerity we are told by Labour, Liberal and Conservative politicians that public spending is going to be cut and efficiency savings will have to be made by local councils. I have two suggestions for Kirklees Council that would save the hard-pressed council taxpayer considerable sums of money.

Kirklees Council should cancel the Public Finance Initiative (PFI) contract with Hochtief which is making huge sums of money out of our children’s education and bring all 19 privatised schools back into local authority control.

The history of PFI in Kirklees is one of a huge waste of taxpayers’ money.

In the current financial year the PFI contract for maintaining all 19 schools is worth over pounds 10 million. Why should the hard-pressed taxpayer be handing over huge sums of money to this company? The other suggestion I have for the council that would save taxpayers’ money is to withdraw completely from the Building Schools for the Future project.

This represents an attempt to privatise even more of our local schools.

The deeply unpopular BSF project which is opposed by a majority of parents and trade unions in north Kirklees, has already wasted over pounds 200,000 in the so-called consultation process over the learn danish last two years.

Despite this, Kirklees Council insists on pushing ahead with the privatisation of schools in south Kirklees.

It seems that the out-of-touch and unresponsive cabinet of Kirklees Council wants to compound one error with another.

Survey Finds Americans Struggling to Balance Love of Fall Sports With Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

Business Wire, Oct 27, 2009

24 Hour Fitness to Help Motivate Americans Nationwide With Free
Workouts Nov. 22-29

SAN RAMON, Calif. — According to a new survey conducted by 24 Hour Fitness the largest
privately owned U.S. fitness chain and a leading health club industry
pioneer the fall sports season is one of the most difficult times of
the year to maintain a fitness regimen. And even though the results show
that people are inspired by their favorite sports and athletes, that
inspiration is not translating into action for most Americans.

The survey, which included more than 1,000 interviews by phone, found
that one in four Americans work out less often during the fall sports
season and one in ten Americans admit to skipping workouts to watch a
sporting event or working out only when they can tune in to the
action while at the gym. With one in five Americans claiming to watch
sports events every day, its no wonder they struggle to stay in shape
during the fall when baseball playoffs collide with the start of
football, basketball and hockey seasons.

Unhealthy eating is a big factor as one third of those surveyed find
themselves consuming more junk food during the fall sports season. They
also claim to have trouble counting those calories: half of those
surveyed find it easier to track their favorite sports players
statistics than their own personal caloric intake and expenditure.

Still, the majority of Americans derive inspiration to accomplish their
fitness goals from sports and want solutions to maintain their goals
during the busy fall sports season. One third of the Americans surveyed
cite football as the sport that inspires them the most to set fitness
goals. However, setting goals doesnt always lead to success.
Participating in group exercises that relate to their favorite sports
would help, according to the survey results.

Its important to take note of lifestyle trends like this and help
people take action to get healthier, whether its simple improvements
like walking instead of driving or bigger challenges like training for a
race, said Carl Liebert III, chief executive officer, 24 Hour Fitness.

To help Americans find the perfect balance this fall, 24 Hour Fitness is
offering free workouts at every club nationwide, Nov. 22 29. In
addition, with sports fans committed to the game during the fall season,
workouts can be inspired by the action they see on the field. 24 Hour
Fitness believes in the power of fitness to change lives and offers the
following tips for cosmetic dentist tulsa those looking to put on their game face and hit the
field running towards their health and fitness goals:

  • Set a goal of watching or listening to sports games while running,
climbing or pedaling on state-of-the-art cardio equipment at a gym.
Bring a workout partner to keep you motivated and focused on the
games score and not the clock.
  • Train like your favorite athlete while adding intensity and variety to
stimulate new muscle groups to burn more calories than fat. Try a
group exercise class such as Everlast Shadow Box or 24Cycle at 24 Hour
Fitness to improve strength, endurance and stability.
  • Even the best athletes need coaching

Encounter books, under the leadership of the idea- and good idea-filled Roger Kimball, is now embarked on a project called “Encounter Broadsides”: “a series of pamphlet-like essays,” says the house, that will reflect “an 18th-century sense of political urgency and rhetorical wit.” Models are Common Sense and the Federalist Papers.

The problems to be addressed, of course, are all our own. We will hear from John Fund on the threat to electoral integrity of ACORN; from Andrew C. McCarthy on the politicization of the Justice Department; and so on
